This is a proposed identity design for the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Library and Information Science Program. They are a graduate-only program with a mission to educate leaders in the information professions, specifically within libraries and archives. They offer a Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS). Creation of a proposed identity design to be used on all printed materials, signage and website for the program. With a new identity, they hoped to attract more people into their program. Their goal was to bring in a Hawai‘i aspect into their new identity, while also expressing cultural diversity, community, accessible knowledge and librarianship. As a whole, this identity represents a community of people with their arms wide open while indicating an accessibility of knowledge and a rising of possibilities. It also symbolizes strength, and as well as the hardworking students within the Library & Information Science Program. The identity was inspired by the shapes found in Hawaiian kapa patterning, the welcoming students and professors, a book standing up with open pages, a compass pointing to the North, ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, and the colors of nature found in Manoa, where the program is located.
