While attending the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, I worked on the Advertising/Marketing and Editorial Design Teams for Ka Leo O Hawai‘i. As a 2020 graduate, my coworkers and advisors appointed me to design the cover of our Spring 2020 Graduation Issue. I worked with Ka Leo’s advisors, editorial staff as well as our editor in chief to come up with a unique illustration that would reflect the UH Manoa 2020 graduates and their feelings towards the COVID-19 pandemic and the university’s decision to cancel the Spring 2020 commencement ceremony.
For my illustration, I wanted the viewer to feel like they were in the graduate’s shoes, sitting in front of a video camera on their own laptop at a virtual graduation ceremony. I designed a laptop screen featuring a Zoom meeting full of graduates from multiple departments on campus. They are all wearing masks to protect themselves and others from COVID-19. On top of the computer, I illustrated a graduation cap and also placed a bottle of hand sanitizer in front of the computer. In the background I illustrated a tower of toilet paper. In May 2020 when this was designed there was a vast toilet paper shortage across the USA, so I used the toilet paper to create the feel that confetti was being thrown in the air for all the graduates.
